Geomatics World: circulation and readership

Geomatics World is the journal of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Geomatics Faculty. Our readers are professional and technically qualified members of the RICS, the UK's qualifying institution for surveyors and professionals working in the geospatial and geoinformation fields. The magazine is circulated to around 5000 English-speaking readers throughout the world

As the business and technical journal of the RICS Geomatics Faculty, we serve the worldwide community of surveyors and other professionals who use or rely on geomatics and its technologies. By informing readers of current and new applications for geomatics, as well as new products which can be applied to geomatics, GW seeks to assist readers in their professional and personal career development. In addition, GW provides a forum for readers, their institutions, associations, learned societies and other industry organisations.

The surveying profession, once regarded mainly as a site-based activity, has changed rapidly in recent years. Today, surveyors (or geomaticians as some prefer) are at the leading edge of applying advanced measuring technologies like satellite position systems (GPS, Glonas and the coming Galileo), laser scanners, electronic distance measurers and other sensors in their daily work.

During the last decade the surveyor's workload has also changed. With the rise of geographical information systems (GIS) and other information systems, coupled with rapid image processing and digital photogrammetry (measurement from images), surveyors and geomaticians are finding that their skills are in high demand from many new business sectors. The term geomatics was therefore coined to better reflect the new age of spatial data acquisition, modelling and management.

Who reads GW?

GW goes to all members of the RICS's Geomatics Faculty; members of the Irish Institution of Surveyors; and the Jamaican Association of Surveyors. In addition, there is a growing number of subscribers around the world and a carefully controlled circulation list of senior individuals in leading companies, professional practices, government, mapping agencies and other relevant organisations.

What products and services do they use?

Surveyors have used electronic measurement and data collection instruments for more than three decades. They were also amongst the earliest users of bespoke software for PCs and mini computers. Today, surveyors and geomaticians use hardware technology like:
  • Total stations (theodolite, EDM and data capture)
  • Laser scanners (both airborne and terrestrial)
  • Satellite positioning systems (GPS and the coming European Galileo system)
  • Aerial and terrestrial large format photography
  • Digital photogrammetric systems including high resolution scanners
  • Field computers (palm, pencomputer and other rugged devices)

Software

Virtually all surveyors use a wide range of software. In addition to office systems, they will use:
  • Field data capture software
  • Data processing software
  • Terrain and surface modelling and analysis packages
  • Image recognition and photogrammetric analysis packages
  • Visualisation and virtual reality packages
  • Geographical information systems
  • Digital mapping and cartographical systems
  • Mapping coordinate and transformation systems

Other Services

The growing range of spatial data products such as mapping and imagery, have presented new opportunities for those in geomatics. Our readers will be at the forefront of using as well as recommending these products to clients throughout the business and public sectors.
